Friederike von Kirchbach
Evangelical Church
Friederike von Kirchbach, born in 1955 near Leipzig as the daughter of a pastor and a cantor, studied theology in Leipzig, Jena and Naumburg, held a pastorate near Dresden and headed the German Evangelical Church Convention as general secretary. In 2005, she was elected to the provost of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz, a position that she held until 2015. This made her the bishop’s deputy and the theological leader in the consistory. She represented the Evangelical Church in numerous committees of church and society. As head of the theological basic department of the consistory, the provost is responsible for all questions of theology and church life. In this function, Friederike von Kirchbach was a voting member of the church leadership and state synod. The particular focus of her work was in the areas of ecumenism and interreligious dialogue. Friederike von Kirchbach has been a pastor in the parish of St. Thomas in Berlin Kreuzberg since 2016.
Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz
The Evangelical Church Berlin-Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische-Oberlausitz is one of 20 member churches (regional churches) of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). It is based in Berlin, is, like all regional churches, a corporation under public law and, with 641,000 registered members, represents the largest religious group in the city. With more than 1,300 parishes in more than 2,000 churches, chapels and community centers, it is present across the board in Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische-Oberlausitz . It also maintains kindergartens, schools, hospitals and much more. At the head of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische-Oberlausitz is the bishop, the spiritual director of the church. He is elected by the state synod for ten years. Markus Dröge has held the office since 2009. The main and sermon church of the EKBO bishop is the St. Marienkirche in Berlin next to the television tower. The bishop also gives regular sermons in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and in the Berlin Cathedral, which is under the joint supervision of the Union of Evangelical Churches.
